Am I A Candidate For Liposuction?

Liposuction is a great treatment option for patients who are at an ideal weight but have pesky areas of fat that have been hard to lose with diet and exercise alone. People considering liposuction should have good skin laxity because liposuction does not address stretched-out or sagging skin. It's also important to know that liposuction is not a treatment for losing weight or a weight-loss procedure. Women undergoing liposuction should have childbearing behind them as this could compromise the lasting outcome they achieve. During your initial consultation, Dr. Seymour will tell you what to expect and help you set realistic expectations.

What Can I Expect from Liposuction?

Liposuction is performed in an outpatient setting while you are under general anesthesia. A very small incision is made through the skin and a cannula will be inserted. The cannula is a tool that makes it easier to work lose the fatty tissue being suctioned out. After the desired amount of fat deposits have been eliminated, Dr. Seymour will seal the incision. Depending on the number of areas being treated, your surgery may last 1 – 3 hours. In the dedicated recovery area, your post-op team will assist you with managing your pain and care for your incisions until you are discharged. You may need to recover at home from lipo for 1 – 3 weeks based on the number of treatments performed and the size of the treatment area. It is normal to have swelling and bruising for 1 – 2 weeks, and you can have stitches taken out after 7 – 10 days. What is most important following liposuction is to give your body time to rest and recover. When you decide to return to work after your procedure, you should do your best to take it easy and build up your strength and stamina by walking and light workouts as recommended by Dr. Seymour. You may notice some improvements soon after your surgery, but it will take 6 – 10 months before your new body contour and shape are attained.

Liposuction FAQ

How much does liposuction cost?
The liposuction will vary depending on the technique being used and the number of areas being treated. During your consultation, Dr. Seymour will create your custom treatment plan to meet your needs and goals. He will also consider your budget. Once your plan is developed, estimated costs will be discussed. To help make your surgery easy to afford, ENT Facial Plastics and Sleep Disorder Center takes many payment options, and we will help you find low-interest financing.

What about nonsurgical liposuction?
There are many nonsurgical options to reduce body fat. Some popular methods are CoolSculpting®, UltraShape, Vanquish, Liposonix, and KYBELLA®. Although some of these nonsurgical treatments may help some patients reduce small amounts of fat, surgical liposuction is still best for most patients. Liposuction surgery produces more consistent and dramatic results. Talk to Dr. Seymour about nonsurgical lipo in your consultation. He can explain the benefits of both methods and help you decide which is best for your needs and goals.

What about cellulite and loose skin?
Surgical liposuction only addresses excess fat in the body. If you have loose skin, Dr. Seymour may recommend combining liposuction with a lift surgery. Lipo is often done with skin tightening surgery, such as a tummy tuck, arm lift, or thighplasty, to give you your best results. For cellulite, there are several minimally invasive and nonsurgical treatments, including Cellulaze, VelaShape®, VASER Shape®, and Venus Freeze™. In your consultation, tell Dr. Seymour about all your concerns like cellulite and loose skin — so your best treatment plan is developed.

Will I have scars?
Since liposuction is an invasive surgery, incisions will be made and sutured. These will leave scars, but Dr. Seymour does his best to minimize their appearance. This starts with making thin incisions in less visible areas or the natural folds of your body. After your surgery, Dr. Seymour or a member of his team will teach you how to care for your incisions — so they heal flat and eventually fade.

Will my results last?
Before liposuction, it's important to be committed to maintaining your results. While liposuction reduces the number of fat cells in an area, you can still gain and lose weight. Dr. Seymour suggests that you be at or close to a healthy weight before having liposuction surgery. Afterward, it is best to remain within 5 – 10 pounds of your post-surgical weight. Pregnancy after liposuction will also affect your results; however, a second surgery like a mommy makeover can be performed to refresh your appearance.
