What is Microneedling?

When over-the-counter skin treatments are no longer effective, but you aren't ready for surgery, learn more about nonsurgical skin rejuvenation treatments, such as microneedling. Board-certified ENT/facial plastic surgeon Dr. B. Terry Seymour is pleased to offer microneedling (also known as collagen induction therapy) at his offices in Atlanta and Lithonia, GA. Microneedling uses several fine needles to safely and effectively create micro-injuries in the skin. The micro-injuries trigger the natural production of elastin and collagen, two nutrients that enhance the overall health and appearance of your complexion. Often performed with other treatments, such as serums or PRP (platelet-rich plasma), microneedling can help minimize pores, scars, and stretch marks. Make an appointment for a consultation at ENT Facial Plastics and Sleep Disorder Center to discover more about the benefits of microneedling and ways to customize the procedure for your skin concerns and goals.

What are the benefits of microneedling?

Benefits of microneedling are abundant for our Atlanta, GA patients, including (but not limited to):

  • Overall improved confidence in your appearance
  • Smoother skin texture and tone
  • Minimization of stretch marks, scarring, and hyperpigmentation
  • Reduction of signs of aging, such as fine lines and wrinkles

Our Microneedling Technique

A microneedling treatment is performed in a private treatment room in around 30 – 60 minutes with numbing cream or local anesthesia if desired, but patients typically feel little or no discomfort. The areas of skin being addressed will be cleaned before the microneedling handpiece is evenly passed over. After the microneedling is done, a topical treatment, like PRP (platelet-rich plasma) or a vitamin-infused serum, can be applied so the nutrients can penetrate deeper into the skin. A moisturizer will be massaged in along with UV protection because the treated skin will be more sensitive after the procedure. You might experience some swelling and redness for about one day; however, this should fade naturally. It may take around 1 – 2 months as the elastin and collagen supply increases until you see visible changes in the appearance and health of your skin. Dr. Seymour typically suggests you schedule about 4 – 6 follow-up treatments performed every 4 – 6 weeks for optimal outcomes and long-lasting skin benefits.

Microneedling FAQ

What exactly is microneedling?
Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a minimally invasive treatment to tighten and rejuvenate your skin. Collagen is a fibrous protein that helps your skin stay supple, smooth, and tight. Over time, your natural supply of collagen is reduced, and your skin gets thin and less elastic. Microneedling creates tiny skin wounds, and these micro-injuries force your skin to increase its collagen production and generate new skin cell growth. After a short recovery period, your skin is firmer, brighter, and healthier.

How many treatments are recommended for optimal results?
Usually, patients need 3 – 6 treatments to achieve their best results. However, how many sessions you need will depend on your goals and the condition of your skin. Microneedling may be done every 4 – 6 weeks as needed. During your initial consultation, Dr. Seymour will be able to estimate how many sessions you will want based on your skin and goals. When you have reached your goal, Dr. Seymour suggests getting maintenance sessions two times a year.

Is microneedling safe for everyone?
Mostly, microneedling is appropriate for all skin types and tones. Since the skin injuries created are so small, there are usually no side effects after the treatment. Microneedling can be performed on most areas of the skin, including the face, arms, neck, chest, and legs. Microneedling is not recommended if you've used Accutane in the last few months, as well as if you have an active skin infection, open wound, or herpes simplex. Additionally, you might not be able to get microneedling if you're pregnant, nursing, or getting radiation therapy.
