What is Sinuplasty?
If you suffer from severe sinus infections or chronic sinusitis, you may want to consider sinuplasty. A balloon sinuplasty is a minimally invasive procedure that we offer at ENT Facial Plastics and Sleep Disorder Center to minimize these symptoms. During a sinus infection, the nasal passage inflames, which causes the sinuses to swell and reduce in size. This prevents mucus and bacteria from properly draining, leading to trouble breathing. To release this abnormal pressure and heal the sinus infection, board-certified ENT/facial plastic surgeon Dr. B. Terry Seymour performs balloon sinuplasty and functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS). These treatments can be performed in our Atlanta or Lithonia, GA office. How is Sinusitis Treated?
ENT Facial Plastics and Sleep Disorder Center provides a variety of different options to treat sinusitis. Before creating your treatment plan, Dr. Seymour will perform an exam to decipher if you have acute or chronic sinusitis. Acute sinusitis is typically caused by a virus and can be treated with pain relievers. Chronic sinusitis, however, needs to be treated differently as it's caused by inflammation rather than infection. In some cases, a nasal irrigation or steroid spray is enough to treat it. For others, however, surgery may be recommended. Dr. Seymour may perform functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) or balloon sinuplasty. During FESS, the drainage pathways between the sinuses and the nose are widened, allowing mucus to flow out of the sinuses better and to allow air in. During a balloon sinuplasty, a balloon is used to create bigger openings in the sinus. Balloon sinuplasty usually takes about an hour whereas FESS could take between 1 – 3 hours. Patients who've had balloon sinuplasty can expect some pain and tenderness the first few days after their treatment and may want to take a day or two at home to rest. You'll need to resist blowing your nose for at least 24 hours after your surgery and follow any post-care instructions. However, those who had FESS may have a more difficult and longer recovery with swelling on the nose and cheeks, as well as nose bleeds. You should likely be able to go back to work after about a week and get back to your normal routine after about three weeks. It could take about 1 – 2 months before you feel normal again. Either way, however, patients find the surgery is worth the relief they feel for years to come.
