What is A Septoplasty?
The septum of the nose, the bone and tissue that separates the nasal passages, is a vital component that supports proper airflow. Some people, however, experience breathing problems because the bone and tissue that make up the septum are not straight. For those people, they may experience sleep apnea, snoring, or something else. Board-certified ENT/facial plastic surgeon Dr. B. Terry Seymour offers septoplasty at his Atlanta and Lithonia, GA practices to help rectify this issue. What are the benefits of a septoplasty?
A deviated septum makes it difficult to breathe through your nose, which can lead to a host of other chronic health problems when left untreated. For example, sleep apnea can lead to loud snoring, gasping for air during sleep, and difficulty falling or staying asleep. A septoplasty is designed to straighten the septum and improve airflow to alleviate these other issues. Dr. Seymour is proud to have helped countless patients breathe better and live healthier and happier lives.
What Can I Expect from My Septoplasty?
During your septoplasty, Dr. Seymour will reshape your septum through a small incision made on the inside of your nose. He will lift and separate your septum tissue so he can access the bone and cartilage, which he will adjust as needed. Dr. Seymour will close the incision with sutures and will put a splint inside your nose to help align the septum as it heals. He may use nose packing to help control bleeding, if necessary. This outpatient surgery typically takes 1 – 2 hours in our accredited surgical procedure room while you are under general anesthesia. After your deviated septum treatment, you will likely have bruising and swelling under your eyes and around your nose. You can expect about 7 – 10 days of recovery with optimal results showing up about three months after your surgery.
